Why “Asking for a Job” Fails
One of the fastest ways to shut down a conversation is to open with:
“Are you hiring?” or “Can you help me get a job?”
Here’s why it doesn’t work:
It puts the other person on the spot.
It feels like a transaction, not a relationship.
Most people don’t even know about openings outside their team.
Instead, shift the ask. Try:
“I’d love to hear how you got started in this field.”
“What trends do you see shaping the industry?”
“What do you enjoy most about your role at [Company]?”
Now you’ve started a real conversation. That’s how trust is built—and trust is what leads to referrals and recommendations.
👉 In my guide, How to Get a Job Without Applying Online, I’ve included scripts for starting these conversations naturally and confidently.
